NASHVILLE DOWNTOWN PARTNERSHIP CELEBRATES WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH WITH SUFFRAGE SATURDAYS MUSIC SERIES

Nashville, Tenn. On March 1, the Nashville Downtown Partnership will launch a music series in Church Street Park to help celebrate Women’s History month. In collaboration with Nashville’s only all-female singer-songwriter showcase, Song Suffragettes, Suffrage Saturdays will bring the emerging female artists’ talents to downtown’s beloved pocket park each Saturday in March. These concerts, presented every Saturday in March from noon to 2 pm, are free and open to the public.

Each event will feature one of Song Suffragettes’ artists in this intimate public space, paying homage to the significant role that this particular corner of downtown Nashville played in American history 105 years ago. In 1920, the Tennessee legislature assembled two blocks from Church Street Park to cast the vote that would make Tennessee the 36th and final vote needed to ratify the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote. On March 8, yellow rose stems will be given to guests in honor of International Women’s Day, which in 1920 symbolized support for women’s suffrage.

Song Suffragettes has been empowering and showcasing emerging female talent for over 10 years, providing a platform for rising stars to share their music and stories. With successful alumnae from Kelsea Ballerini to Gayle to Lainey Wilson, this series brings unique access to a diverse collective of talented women who perform every Monday night at 6pm at downtown’s The Listening Room Café” says Maddie Lenhart, Event Director of Song Suffragettes. “In 2020, Song Suffragettes was part of the official U.S. centennial celebration of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, and we’re honored to celebrate that historic moment again through Suffrage Saturdays at Church Street Park as part of Women’s History month.”

“Our city and our downtown hold a special place in this story of American democracy,” said Crissy Cassetty, VP of Parks & Placemaking with the Nashville Downtown Partnership. “We are thrilled for this opportunity to help our community celebrate Women’s History month, and to bring such a groundbreaking event to our regular Church Street Park programming.”
