Nashville Downtown Partnership Brings International Leading Urbanist Richard Florida for Its 2026 Annual Meeting & Awards Luncheon

In partnership with Vanderbilt University, Florida returns five years after his sold-out 2021 keynote to share insights from a quarter century of research on cities and what comes next

October 7, 2026, Nashville, Tenn. – The Nashville Downtown Partnership (NDP) has teamed up with Vanderbilt University to welcome international leading urbanist and best-selling author Richard Florida back to its Annual Meeting & Awards Luncheon as the keynote speaker on Wednesday, October 28, at Music City Center.

Florida captivated more than 1,000 Nashville business and community leaders at the Partnership’s 2021 Annual Meeting. Now, five years later, he returns to Nashville at a particularly significant moment in his career and for cities around the world.

Florida has spent more than two decades examining the forces shaping cities, their economies and the people who live and work in them. His landmark 2002 book, The Rise of the Creative Class, helped reshape the conversation around talent, creativity and the role of place in economic growth. Since then, his research and writing have explored the changing geography of work, innovation, urban growth, inequality and the future of cities. Now, as Florida approaches the publication of his next book, The Way We Live Next (HarperBusiness – May 2027), Nashville audiences will have the opportunity to hear his latest thinking on the forces shaping the cities of tomorrow.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Richard Florida back to Nashville five years after his first talk with us,” said Tom Turner, President and CEO of Nashville Downtown Partnership. “His research uniquely positions him to reflect on a quarter century of urban evolution, during which Nashville’s downtown has evolved into a thriving neighborhood for all who live, work and play here. The intersection of that research with our current moment – both globally and locally – is what audiences will want to hear and what Richard is so great at sharing. We’re excited to hear his latest thinking and bring that conversation to Nashville.”

Florida's return is also a continuation of the Partnership's collaboration with Vanderbilt University, which began with his 2021 visit. In September, Vanderbilt announced that Florida had joined its faculty as a University Distinguished Professor, with appointments in the Owen Graduate School of Management and the School of Engineering, where he will lead the university's work on the future of cities. Florida is also founder of the Creative Class Group and co-founder of CityLab, the leading publication devoted to cities and urbanism.

“Nashville has become a major innovation hub, and our next chapter will depend on the choices we make as that growth continues,” said Vanderbilt University Chancellor Daniel Diermeier. “Richard’s work brings an important perspective to those choices and to the role institutions like Vanderbilt can play in shaping the future of cities. We’re proud to partner with the Nashville Downtown Partnership to bring that conversation to Nashville.”

Florida’s return to the Annual Meeting & Awards Luncheon marks a significantly different atmosphere in Nashville’s business landscape since his last address, when the COVID-19 pandemic remained top-of-mind in 2021. Since then, a national study of the U.S.’s 25 largest metropolitan areas ranked Nashville’s downtown first overall in economic recovery since 2019, when combining its standings of 2nd in visitor recovery, 3rd in resident recovery, and 4th in worker recovery, making downtown Nashville the only metro to place within the top five slots in all three categories. Florida’s return comes at a particularly interesting moment, overlapping with significant capital projects and milestones sitting on the city’s horizon.

The Annual Meeting & Awards Luncheon is downtown Nashville’s signature business gathering, bringing together hundreds of business, civic and community leaders to celebrate the people, places and projects shaping the urban core. The event will also recognize this year’s award winners in the categories of LIVE, WORK, PLAY and INVEST.
