Historic Information
244 Fifth Avenue North is located just a few buildings down from the Arcade. It is a brick three-story building that has been covered and painted. The building can be seen on maps of downtown as early as 1888. It is uncertain how the building originally looked as the facade was covered in the 20th century, but it was likely similar to the brick building next door that was erected around the same time.
Much of the building’s history is related to textiles and clothing. From 1900 to the late 1920s, it was home to the Nashville branch of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. During the Great Depression, the old Singer building became a shoe store. From 1940 through the rest of the 20th century, 244 5th Avenue North had a revolving door of tenants, all of which used the building as a clothing store. In 2014, the building underwent a massive renovation and was converted into modern living spaces.
