In her song “Velvet Elvis,” Kacey Musgraves references a black velvet painting of Elvis Presley. Thought to have originated in the Kashmir region of India and popularized in Mexico, velvet painting journeyed across continents and evolved into American folk art. During this workshop, try your hand at this unique, enduring art form by creating your own black velvet painting using pastels and black light paint. Learn to paint a portrait of Presley or another icon of your choice, then see your art glow under a black light! Ages 5 and up. Presented in support of the exhibit Kacey Musgraves: All of the Colors. Taylor Swift Education Center. Included with museum admission. Free to museum members.
