Although Matthew Ritchie’s early paintings appear far from traditional in composition, treatment of form, and materials, these works are deeply rooted in the long-standing practice of historical painting. Join Mishoe Brennecke for this gallery talk to learn more about how Ritchie responds to the catastrophic events such as 9/11 and the subsequent war in Afghanistan, exploring the connections between these and large-scale historical paintings of the Romantic period.
Mishoe Brennecke is a professor of art history at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, where she teaches courses on American, British, and French art of the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. Her current research project focuses on the work of the nineteenth-century German American artist Johannes Oertel, who devoted the entirety of his mature career to the creation of a series of epic religious paintings now owned by the University of the South.
